Forster’s Terns perch on pilings above the water at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, near Cambridge, MD. The pilings were formerly used to hold “gill nets,” which basically funneled marine life into a small, narrow area, where they could be captured by fishermen. Such devices were made illegal in most places in the US and the world because of the harm they did to critters and the environment.
